Default WLAN Speed fluctuations

Laptop with XP pro SP2 and Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG network card.
Connecting to a Netgear DG834B router.

Have the latest drivers for the wlan card and the latest firmware for the
router.

Using windows Xp to configure card rather than intel software. Setup as
WPA-PSK(TKIP) network.

Signal Strength is and stays excellent but after intial connection the speed
drops to 1.0 Mbps rather than maintaining the 54Mbs that it initially
connects at.
