Default Studying

Hi

I have recently embarked on the 2yr road to study for the MSCE 2003 course.
I'm using the Thomson NetG course material (through ICS) which includes CD's
(mostly informationtopics and assesments) and course guide books (which
covers information and lab content plus assesments) My question is has anyone
used the same course material from Thomson, and which material did you use
combination of cds and books or just cd's or juct books, as i am finding it
increasingly difficult to to study or find which is the best meterial to use.
I should be sitting my first exam about now to be on course for the course
finish date.

cheers

Hopefully you are also doing a lot of hands on work as well? Any course
material is good to give you the basics, but you *must* setup, install,
explore, break and fix the various operating systems. Running you own labs
also gives you a break from just reading or doing practise exams. Use the F1
button lots and use the online Resource Kit at Microsoft's website. Ask
questions here. don't just read, do it.

Agreed. If you dont have extra hardware to do it on get yourself a copy of
virtual PC and (at a minimal) go through the stuff in the lab.

Can you do it by wireless networking?

would you say its better to do the books which include the labs and forget
the cds, which are just purely, well to me just an interactive book. To be
honest I hate the cd's I'd prefer just hands on approach, (obviously due to
financial commitments I had to do get the cheap option, so no class rooms or
tutors.)

Better to do the books and labs - as much hands-on as possible! Create a
Domain Controller, install a client, play with Group Policy ... ask heaps of
questions (only after you've tried, and shown, to find the answer yourself
on MS' website), we're here to help genuine attempts to acheive your MCSE.
If you have a pentium lll 733 with 512Mb RAM or better, you can run virtual
pc's. Get yourself over to http://www.vmware.com and download their *free*
version! Admittedly, it only runs on Windows 2000 or 2003 server but that
shouldn't be a problem. Install a server and a client in a virtual
environment, connected by a virtual switch, all the details are in the Help
section of vmware.

Hi me again, which version of vmware do I need just the server version or one
of the other ones?

VMWare server version is free. but it's also very new. You might also want
to look at VMWare Workstation ($400USD last I checked) or MS VirtualPC
($100USD or so last I checked).

I use Virtual PC, but you also need to keep in mind you need a lot of
physical memory for this to be utilized properly. I have 2 GB in the
machine I use running 3 virtual servers (256mb a piece).

But it is way better than having to buy individual machines, power
requirements, space, etc.

How much does this VPC cost?

I spent less than $1000 building my own computer...AMD AthlonXP 2800+ on a
Gigabyte GA7VAXP motherboard with 1GB of RAM (expandable to 2GB), CD Burner,
120GB HDD + 200GB HDD, ATI 8500 Video Card, Audigy Sound, NIC, a small hub, and
a KVM switch for the monitor, KB, and mouse.

I understand your concerns for power requirements and space, but what happens if
your HDD crashes? Won't you lose *all* your information? It seems my electric
bill isn't much more having 2 machines than 1, but then I only have the other
machine running when I'm working on exam stuff.
