I finally got Live Messenger 8.5 working on my x64 XP... this is my first
Messenger beta... will it auto-update when something more stable is
released? Or am I stuck having to check regularly and updating manually?

Your are not stuck.
It will prompt you if any updates are available.
I had a previous beta and was notified that way.
