What is the difference between a domain and a workgroup?

Very generally, a domain is created when you have a server (running a
real server operating system) and workstations that are members of that
domain. Some advantages of a domain are centralized workstation
management, including permissions and rights, maintenance, backup, and
applications that run from the server. In a business, if you have 8-10
machines you should be looking at running a server and creating a
domain.

A workgroup is a cosmetic/organizational device for computers on a
peer-to-peer network. There is no server.

If you would like more information, please post back with a more focused
question about what you are trying to do and what this has to do with
wireless networking, since you posted in the wireless networking
newsgroup.

Some important differences are...

A domain allows centralized management (of user accounts, for example).

A domain requires a server operating system (~$1000US retail for Windows
2003 Server).
