I've got a couple of 6509s running 2500 watt power supplies which plug
into 20amp circuits.

The "show power" readings in the CLI however don't 'jive' with reality
- at least not the raw numbers. If there is some funny math going on I
haven't been able to find an explanation on the CCO site.

Here's the show power output:

system power used = 1832.88 Watts (43.64 Amps @ 42V)
system power available = 1947.12 Watts (46.36 Amps @ 42V)

Now the circuits for each PS are 20 amps but the available power is
55.5 amps? Is this because it is using only 42VDC rather than the total
available (20?

Maybe I'm showing a complete lack of understanding of electricity...

Just do some math:

110V x 20A = 2200 Watt (simplified - real formula is more complex)
2200Watt / 42V = 52 A

Since you do not use your power supplies in redundancy mode, power is
combined. If you will switch your power supplies into the redundancy mode,
you will have available power equal to one power supply.

Problem with using power supplies in combined mode - if one PS fails or one
circuit goes down, you may loose some cards (not sure how to give
priorities). If you are not planning to add new cards or add a bunch of IP
phones, then I would recommend to switch them into the redundancy mode.
