Found a bunch of folders called WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ and
$NtUninstallEmeraldQFE2$. They have dll filed in them. Never seen these
folders before. Anyone know if they are useless or what their purpose would
be? Thanks in advance.

See: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1205303.php
The MVP there says don't delete them.

...appears to be a patch for Windows Media Player.

All "$NtUninstall...$" are the previous versions of files which were
patched or 'hotfixed' by Windows Updates. They do no harm in place. If
you are running low on disk space, you could delete the older ones. If
you do, you would not be able to undo the patch/hotfix, though. If you
haven't found an immediate reason to undo a patch, you probably don't
have to undo it later.

When you typed the $hf_mig$ in Google what did it say?
(that's a hint to try it before you respond)
