I've recently had to do a REPAIR (not restore) with XP Pro.... (had a
problem with USB ports not working 100%)....

Since the repair XP keeps downloading updates (80- in all ) that need
installing... they download - I run them/install re-boot and the updates are
not installed and XP starts again downloading and then telling me that new
updates are ready ... install and again 80 are not or could not be
installed ?

Every time i switch on and boot up XP starts downloading these same updates
then tell s me they are ready to install but again after INSTALL/BOOT says
'could not install' (shows a long list of updates that wouldn't
install)...??

Seems something's gone out of sync.with it.... !

Anyone know what's happening or how to cure ???

Have you updated the updater?

One doesn't have to have read a link to post one based on an interesting
headline.

What I'm getting at is that they're about forcing updates even when you
have them disabled. In that context, I'd think "I have updates turned
off" to be not much defense. Yes, I see the smiley, but I that that
was a smug ("I'm protected!") smiley, not a joking smiley.

It is smugness, I haven't really updated since SP2, I did the WMF one
and the time zone and a few others but no I don't get the updates, I
have turned off the ability of one coming in (I don't call out).

Doing so I prevent the stuff they are pulling (the suprise WGA), now
this.

I don't trust windows never have, and do what I need to keep mine,
keep to itself.

Since the REPAIR XP seems to have gone back to a 'clean install' with no
updates - so it wants to install everything it can... it downloads them - I
run to install but it tell me there are some that cannot be installed
(80).... Nothing in control panel (show updates is ticked )....

Lets try simple stuff first.
GoTo: Start>Windows Update
A basic check is performed and you should then be presented with
two options: "Express" and "Custom"
Select: "Custom"
A scan is performed ("Checking for latest updates for your computer")
Once scan is complete, it will detail what updates are available, which
will be made up of the 80 that it already tried but failed to install.
To the left of screen will be a tree that details updates by type:
High Priority
Software, Optional
Hardware, Optional
Go through all the options and DE-select the Software and Hardware
*optional* updates. (Just un-tick boxes etc)
Only select to install "High Priority" updates.
Once the High Priority update installation is complete, if successful -you
will get the Option to Restart.
Upon reboot, perfom the above *Custom* install again, and this time
try to install the Optional updates.
