I have a desktop running ME with a dial up connection, and a laptop running
XP with a wireless connection to the desktop. I can transfer files in a limited way using the desktop (cannot use laptop to move files to the desktop, but can used desktop to move files back and forth to the laptop), and cannot get any internet connection for the laptop. Im using linksys wireless g WEP encrypted. Anyone know something I might not have set up correctly for the ICS? Also, I keep running into the XPs need to enter a password to access the shared files on the desktop. Any help is truly appreciated. Thanks. Brian Brian O |

Posting the results of ipconfig /all on both computers may help.

Hi
If you connected the Wireless Router using the WAN port you created two segregated Networks and thus traffic goes only one way. The Wireless Router has to be connected through a regular port. This page describe the principle, http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html Jack (MVP-Networking). You also should know that WEP encryption -- which unfortunately is the best you can do with XP in an ad hoc network -- is quite easily cracked these days. You really should buy yourself a wireless router. They're not very expensive, and in addition to permitting the use of better encryption, will provide you a layer of protection (NAT plus, in many cases, a built-in firewall) from Internet nasties. Here's a (now obsolescent) article by MS-MVP Barb Bowman explaining how to set up ICS using a wireless ad hoc connection: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...02april08.mspx The article is based on XP, but I assume that ICS in WinME works similarly. -- Lem MS MVP -- Networking To the moon and back with 64 Kbits of RAM and 512 Kbits of ROM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer Lem |

I cant use a router because they require a high speed connection and I don't have that. Also, I do have ICS set up on the ME desktop already. What gives you the idea that its not set up? Is there something indicated in the ipconfig stuff or is this just a guess? Thanks, but I've tried looking at that webpage already. B Brian O |

ICS includes a "DHCP Allocator" which assigns IP addresses (and the gateway address) to adapters on the local network. These are in the subnet 192.168.0.x Thus, when ICS is correctly set up, the wireless adapter in your desktop should have an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the wireless adapter in your laptop should have an IP address of 192.168.0.x (2 <= x <=254) and a Default Gateway of 192.168.0.1. In contrast, the wireless adapter in your WinME desktop has an APIPA-type IP address of 169.254.4.40 and the wireless adapter in your laptop has a similar IP address of 169.254.177.184. Although these two IP addresses allow the two computers to communicate in an ad hoc wireless network, it is not an ICS network. This MSKB article describes setting up ICS in WinMe: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229829 Here are some manual steps that work in XP; I don't know how closely the correspond to what's available in Me (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126/): 1. Open the Network Connections folder. 2. Right-click the ICSHARE Adapter connection. 3. Click Properties. 4. Click Advanced. 5. Put a check mark in the box "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection. 6. If there's a box that says "Select a private network connection", click the arrow and select the wireless-G USB adapter connection. -- Lem -- MS-MVP - Networking To the moon and back with 64 Kbits of RAM and 512 Kbits of ROM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer Lem |

ICS includes a "DHCP Allocator" > which assigns IP addresses (and the gateway address) to adapters on the > local network. These are in the subnet 192.168.0.x When you say network adapter, are you talking about a router? If so, this network doesnt have a router. It has a pci card and a usb adapter in an ad hoc network, there is no router. The two machines are set up to only talk to each other directly, not through a router. Its like having a crossover ethernet cable between them. They worked fine with the cable, and shared the internet connection. They just wont do it over wireless for some reason. Ill look into the IP addresses, but Im not sure that is the problem. The DHCP is what is assigning the IPs now. > > Thus, when ICS is correctly set up, the wireless adapter in your desktop > should have an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the wireless adapter in > your laptop should have an IP address of 192.168.0.x (2 <= x <=254) and > a Default Gateway of 192.168.0.1. > > In contrast, the wireless adapter in your WinME desktop has an > APIPA-type IP address of 169.254.4.40 and the wireless adapter in your > laptop has a similar IP address of 169.254.177.184.
