Default Wireless Ad-Hoc

Well, often my friend and I want to transfer files between our laptops. I heard that you could transfer files using ad-hoc, so I set one ad-hoc network up. Then he connected to the network. However, despite many attempts, we were never able to transfer files between the two laptops. So can anyone please point me to the correct way of how to transfer the files?
Thanks.
