Could you tell me which recovery program you used so that I don't use that
one? I am probably going to use EASEUS Data Recovery.

If the data is corrupt then you will recover corrupt data no matter what
tool you use.

Most likely not the recovery program used, but the scrambled file
allocation table.

Going with the DIY method then and downloading wizard based tools?

If the data is valuable get a recovery service to do it for you. Many
appear to provide free quotes.

You may try testdisk from a bootable media such as hirens bootcd.
However, when the resizing involved a cluster size change, you probably are
lost.

Before you use PM it's advisable to back up your data.
Also...the machine *must* be on a UPS to avoid a shut down.

That said...your best hope is to re-run partition magic
from a boot disk and see if there is a recoverable partition.
If not...it's time for data recovery software...
If you google, you'll find many that have trail versions...
so you can see if any find your data

This is most likely over your head but posted anyhow.

I assume NTFS file system (cause FAT would be too easy)
There are two boot sectors NTFS stores, it's possible to overwrite the
corrupt one with the backup.

Unless as part of your loss prevention you made a backup of your MBR?
(That is what the PM boot disk holds.)

Thank you for your post. This sounds like the fastest way to recover my
data. Can you advise where I can obtain a copy of Norton Disk Probe and
Norton Diskedit and can you be sure they will work with the XP version of
NTFS which I understand is not exactly the same as the NT version?

Oh Lord, it's got the word Norton on it. You should make sure your back is
up against the nearest wall so that you won't be stabbed in the back by
Norton. You had better get an UPS for Norton.

Right here http://files.filefront.com//;8363717;;/

While diskprobe is included I wouldn't use it, the only reason the
file is mention in the link is MS produced it.

Download and create a Win98 boot disk http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
boot with it. use DiskEdit from there.

I've thrown in diskmap, run that and keep the data on file, next time
this happens you can use diskedit and plug in the numbers from
diskmap.

Norton Disk utilities was a must have running DOS and just a little
into Windows - then it dropped it's dos support.

Diskedit one of the better disk editors made. It defaults to read only
and you can play around to find your way; when ready set it to write.
