Default New to IT

Many have stated in this group that certifications are designed for people
who already have IT experience. If a person is wanting to enter the IT field
with very little experience, what is the best way to do this?

Getting a degree is a good start.

I got my foot in the door while Co-op ing from my technical college.
The certs have helped open further doors since. With no experiece the
key is to try to land a good interview. It is there that you can talk
about how great you can fix and build pcs and such. Write down and
bring examples of stuff you have done for friends and family. Also if
you even diversify and have done side projects that show how flexible
you are with computers. For example I have written a few websites for
some very small business and got paid a couple hundred dollars. They
were happy with the work but i definitely think it is "decent ameture"
level. However in an interview I can use that as another leverage
tool.

Find the job you want eventually, look at the qualifications listed on
other job postings that are similar, and start manuevering.

The key for most people is to just land that first interview.

Hi there.

It is difficult, but not impossible - I managed to change career to IT at
the age of 41. As CBIC and Frisbee say, getting a degree is a good start,
as it shows that you have a certain level of intelligence and that you are
willing to study hard (though that doesn't mean to say that anyone without a
degree is not intelligent or hard-working, I hasten to add!). Also, doing
voluntary work is an excellent way to gain experience.

Don't concern yourself with obtaining certs at this early stage, as it is
more important to get that all-important experience, as this is what
employers value most.

My suggestions, based on my experience, can be found in an articlel entitled
"First Steps" at http://www.theitclassroom.com/.

Hope this helps.

Found myself in your position, I have an MCP, MCDST, A+ and Network+ and now
work in an entry level IT job. You will need to cast your net wide. I
registered with jobsite.co.uk and applied for jobs daily until I was offered
one. It can be done!

I'm definitely in the same boat. If you have other experience that can be
utilized at an IT company you may also have another route into the field. I
work for an IT company that is also Microsoft Gold Partner and worked in a
partial IT position for 3 yrs. After showing my dedication I received the
opportunity to get full hands on experience while i study for certifications.
My advice is to always keep your eyes peeled for opportunity.
