At least for the lens if it is a Nikon. It just goes to show you that the
old Nikkors, even DX lenses, hold their value.

Shouldn't this really be titled "drop your lens in the ocean and throw
away $700+"?

There is no explanation for the insanity of humans!
Over $500 for a lens "some parts may be salvaged"!?

That's a rip-off.
Here (New Zealand) you could have bought a 4 month old D2xs, with
70-200VR for only NZ$400 (=US$300 or so).

Excellent! Do you have any idea how this camera and lens ended up
underwater for 3 months?

Bizarre indeed. The only thing that eclipses that nonsense is VW 21
and 23 window busses. I've seen rusted out shells go for $10,000.
$10k for a shell and untold thousands more to bring one back,
