MCSE - OT: MCNGP: Saving Ben Smith some time... |

It's been indicated that Ben Smith has to spend an excess amount of time
cleaning up messages in this group. As one of the principal offenders, I've come up with a potential solution... a web based chat room. I like to communicate with the members of this group, keeps my existance from slipping too far into oblivion, so I'm donating the use of an application I'm working on called PMS - Personal Messaging Server. Previously I'd written this application on MS Internet Information Server, and had nearly completed all of the work, when an abhorrent new 'security warning' was released which made key features of the application unusable, or at least annoying enough to irritate me. As such, in protest, I've been porting the application over to work on PHP servers. What this means is, the application, while stable, is in a very primitive state. I can offer up the server and the bandwidth and the software, all I ask is for feedback on what sort of features you'd like to see in an improved version. For a peek at what the IIS version looks like, and what I expect to add to later versions of the PHP application, see http://www.roblindman.com/mcngp/pms-iis.gif . That one works over XMLHTTP and supports animated characters. The reason why the IIS version isn't online already is because I've written it as a server component, and no ISP I've found will register these without a boatload of money, something I currently could use for other more pressing matters. Anyway, all of that said, you can experience the lame, work in progress, designed for Lynx text only browsers version that I got together for the current need at http://www.roblindman.com/mcngp/ . And I really do recommend picking up a copy of Lynx to use it, it's much better than using it through a typical web browser. I realise this version sucks, I'll be working throughout the week to improve it. If you do use it, you'll be contributing to two good causes. One being reducing the traffic in this area, the other being helping me to track down bugs in my application. Ben, hope this helps. Microcephalic S. Bob http://www.roblindman.com/ /* Microcephalic S. did you hear "/* Microcephalic S. Bob [MCSBNGP+++ #7.13.86.42.1138.2600]
*/" <@> say in news:: > http://www.roblindman.com/mcngp/ has a 6 on the cool scale. but the whole idea of wrapped text, textbox focus and non-scrolling replies is what did you in. That and the fact that there's no beta newsgroup for it on the MS site ... -- Neil MCNGP#30 - I don't work long hours. They are all 60 minutes, just like everyone else's. Neil |

Ok. I caught everyones comments here...
As I said, this is a scaled back version. The goal here is to get a functional version up and then move over my fancier stuff. You can try my other more experimental versions at: http://www.roblindman.com/chat/3/ - most recent version - has a choice of 'clients' http://www.roblindman.com/chat/2/ - a frames based version which auto updates http://www.roblindman.com/chat/ - semi stable version JaR will still have the name length problem, which I intend to fix after a nap. Try the other ones out and let me know what you think. I'm working on consolidating / fixing / etc. and when I am ready to go with it, I'll put it into the MCNGP space. But if you build a > chat client for us, wont we spend less time here? I also like the frames.2 version the best. However, if it weren't for the constant pinging in the http://www.roblindman.com/chat/2/ version, that would be my favorite. I don't mind the pinging, it's the pinging being displayed. Other than that, it looks to be the best version. Great work, McBob. Especially great work for throwing it together on a whim. -- KB MCNGP #26 Last one to www.mcngp.com is a rotten egg! Briscobar |
