My dad showed up the other day with a pretty short haircut. In fact, I asked
him if his barber cut adults' hair too. It's the classic "School's out for the summer" haircut sported by many 9 year olds the world over. Anyway, what got me thinking, and thinking, and thinking, and thinking, and thinking some more, was the question I posed to him: How does hair know how long it is? For instance, your head hair will grow and grow, to seemingly infinite lengths, unless you do something about it. Like going to a barber and cutting your hair to look like a child. But, body hair doesn't keep growing. Try this (I'm not ashamed to say I did): Find a place on your body where your wife/girfriend/other won't notice your feminine behavior for a few days. Shave any hair in this small area off. Or trim it really tight. Wait a few days, a week, whatever, then check back with your smooth silky skin. It's the same length as the surrounding hair! What gives? Shouldn't it be shorter? After all, it grew, but so did the surrounding hair! Right?! Apparently not! What's the deal? Body hair is some kind of superintelligent being. Individually, they're pretty F'in stupid. Put them together en masse, and they KNOW. The just KNOW. It's creepy. Head hair and facial hair don't seem to posess this intelligence. Is head hair of a different species than body hair? -- KB MCNGP #26 I'm running out of stupid stuff to write. Oh by the way: www.mcngp.com. Briscobar |

I know the answer to this. I figured it out when I was about 10. If you're still interested I'll explain it to you. Until then, have fun exploring your body. kp "hey, get your hands off that" g kpg |

As scintillating as your deep thoughts are, the answer is relatively simple.
The hair falls out and a new one replaces it. Jtyc |

But it took up quite a bit of my time trying to solve this eons-old puzzle. Or maybe this puzzle just exists in my own warped little mind. Who knows? My apologies. I wrote my response before I had seen yours. From now on, I shall exercise patience. *meditates* Jtyc |

Self-regulating hair length is really the norm across
hairy species. Human body hair, and animal hair (like your dog) grows to a genetically predetermined length. The real anomaly is head hear (and some French women's arm pit hair) that seems to grow unregulated. I think back to prehistoric man and wonder what was the point of long head hair? To keep the sun of the back of the neck? Apes don't possess long head hair, but then they have hairy necks too. Things that make you go hmmmmmm... Glad we had this time to talk. kpg kpg |
