Windows Genuine Advantage Notification??

What is this that pops up everytime I boot up now, after a recent WIndows
update? The copy of Windows XP Pro on my computer is my own copy, bought and
paid for when I built the system over three years ago. Why am I now being nagged
on every boot up? I use Zone Alarm firewall. Will I cause myself a problem by
"denying" Windows Genuine Advantage Notification access to the net and then
clicking for Zone Alarm to always remember that setting? Thanks.

It was on, or about, Thu, 12 Jul 2007 08:10:26 -0400, that as I was

Uh, well NO actually. Unlike a Linux distribution which *is* yours when
you download it or buy it, you did *not* buy a copy of Windows XP. You
bought a *licence* from M$ to use it, NOT the OS itself.

Are we supposed to guess?

Yeah, you paid a "license" fee... as did I - and everyone else legal.

Geezus, just let it have permissions... Like you [almost] said,
you paid the fees, you may as well enjoy the full access that
their WGA allows legal users.

I have a bootleg copy of xp which i no longer use die to WGA.

Does the M$ Update cripple certain features of the OS when they find
out your copy is a fake one ?

Not so much any active effort on the part of M$ to cripple any
specific targets, but by the nature of the WGA and update access
limitations, it leaves the pirated copies either vunerable or
just a ridiculously intensive and convoluted time-consuming
process to keep updated and relatively safe. Plus, with the
pirated flavors, if *anything* goes wrong, you always wonder...

It just seems relatively inexpensive to get legal with XP nowadays.

You can delete WGA so it doesn't run during bootup. There are several
Google hits on how to do this. Obviously not everyone is going to an
always-on connection, like for dial-up users, so it can't always phone
home. I use DiamondCS ProcessGuard which denies it from ever loading.
However, when you visit Windows Update, you still stuck with having to
use their ActiveX WGA control. As I have heard, you can only get the
security updates with "fake ones" (i.e., non-security updates require
WGA to run and validate your copy).

Except microsoft ****ups will screw up even legal copies. I've just
had one of the laptops screwed with the latest patch. Funnily enough
none of the others were affected.

I seriously have felt the pain of a renegade M$ update.

Lucky for me, I haven't had one go bad in quite some time, but what I
always do before 'update Tuesdays' is image my drive [I use PQDI 2002] and
manually set a restore point.

That may be true when you visit the Windows Update website (which, as I
recall, will insist that you undergo WGA verification even before you can
download the updates), BUT -- if you've got your Automatic Updates set to
"Notify me but don't automatically download or install them", you will be
notified and you can then perform a Custom Install un-checking the box for
the WGA. I've always figured that "Windows Genuine Advantage" would somehow
be to my DIS-advantage . . .
