Using e-mail to verify new username

On some sites you have to login before you can do certain things.

I have the sample "Personal Web Starter Kit", that shows a lot about the
login controls so I know how to have a login item.

On some sites you have to give an e-mail address to active the new login
username.

I'd like to do that. Do I have to figure out and implement all that is
required or is there a control or example that might help get me started.

Thanks in advance
