Default help - keyboard stops working

Ok, here's my problem:

got a regular PS/2 keyboard, upon boot it is detected, but when windows is loading the led light (num block) goes out and keyboard will not work once boot is complete and windows is operational. However this is not always so, and sometimes the num block led stays on and keyboard will work.

However heres the tricky bit.. after a while, sometimes a short time, sometimes longer, the keyboard will just quit working. NO keys work. Sometimes the led light goes out when this happens, sometimes it doesnt. The fact that the led light sometimes stays on leads me to believe that it is still connected as power is reaching it.

Have tried unplugging and plugging in the keyboard cable at back of pc when this happens, with no change. Only way to get it to work again is a reboot (or several reboots).

Have tried using another keyboard. cordless keyboard/mouse combo. Receiver is PS/2. Same problem, however when it dies, both keyboard and mouse die.

My USB mouse has no problems.

Any ideas?

I would suggest removing and reinstalling the keyboard/mouse drivers, it is possible that the drivers for usb are being used for the standard ps2 devices. the drivers should be on a floppy included with the device pack, if not then go to the manufacturers web site and look for the correct drivers zipped file, then copy them down into your computer and unzip and install them.

it is not really a good idea to keep swapping types about as the drivers are selected as default for example ps2 drivers will be unable to communicate with usb devices,
in Control Panel/ System/ Hardware/Device Manager/ Keyboards
The default and only driver will be standard 101/102 key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 keyboard
in the mouse and other pointing devices
The default will be PS/2 Compatable Mouse
if you have other types of either device you must install the correct drivers for them to work with the operating system
