I have got a windows Vista operating system. It is a dell pent4
2.8Ghz.

The problems i have with my computer is that when the computer turns
on, the "explorer" - desktop and start menu don't load up. Instead
"explorer.exe."- eg my documents loads up. I then have to end the task
"or close my documents" and type in "explorer" in the new tasks option
of the task manager.

My second problem is that the computer just "randomly" closes/shuts
down when you type in something like CMD etc. What can/shall i do?

P:S: I have AVAST antivirus and i have no viruses on my computer.

I have run "hijack this" and this is what the log says;

Fix THAT above. You have a trojan on the system. This link shows you how:
http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=2845

I didn't even look any further. There may be other problems. But until you
fix the trojan, your system will probably continue to be unstable and trying
to fix anything else could be futile.

The first thing many malicious programs attempt to do is disable the
antivirus on your local computer. You will need to check into the condition
of your Avast software as well, since it didn't deal with this trojan.

Suggest you run this scan (from Microsoft):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
Click on the link where it says "New: Windows Vista users, try the beta
edition of the scanner, just for Windows Vista."

Or this:

Don't blame Vista. Blame the users who allow malicious software to install
itself on their computers. Safe hex is the USER'S responsibility. See my
reply to the OP - he has a trojan. That comes from bad computer use habits.
I've NEVER had a trojan or virus or worm on any of my PCs, running
practically every version of Windows written.

I forgot to add, run HJT again and post a new logfile as there still may be
more reg entries to delete.

Vista will have problems with a program that's not Vista compliant, so you
can't run around just installing programs on Vista, without knowing that
it's Vista compliant. In addition, if your machine is not Vista compliant,
that too may cause issues.

Vista does offer the same type of "compatibility" settings that it's
predecessors did. So far I've got only two programs that haven't run
correctly: an old game "Shanghai Second Dynasty" and the new beta of Apple's
Safari web browser. I expect the second to be fixed, since it's still in
beta. The other is so old, it barely ran in XP.

Active Ports will not run on Vista no matter what compatibility settings are
used. I went and found CurrPorts that is Vista compatible.

I downloaded and installed an ActiveX control. When I rebooted the machine
later on, Explore started crashing, which I did a restore to eliminate the
problem. It was at that point that it was made clear that you just can't
install programs at will on Vista.

This is most of the problems I see in Vista NG(s) is users installing
programs that worked on XP but don't work on Vista. And they can't put 2+2
together to understand that the problems are due to that program that was
just installed.

The other major problem is an upgrade of Vista over XP. In most cases, it's
just best to boot off the Vista upgrade install CD/DVD, format the HD and
lay down Vista fresh. Vista over Vista upgrade, yes. Vista upgrade over
anything else is questionable.

I'm sure there are plenty of programs still in that situation. I've just not
ran into many myself, that I didn't know were a problem to start with. Like
Active Ports, and many other security applications (AV, firewall, etc.), I'd
expect that the code in Vista is rewritten (MS promised a more secure OS...)
and it will take time for developers to rewrite their software to handle the
changes.

That's just sad <g>! Basic logic. Apparently our schools are not teaching
kids to THINK but only to memorize stuff. But that's a whole 'nother topic.

I've always felt that way. A new OS should be a new install. I did upgrade
my Vista Premium to Vista Ultimate, because there was another thing I forgot
that didn't run: my VPN and login to NetWare. But that's Novell's fault -
they should have clients available by now. And when I did the upgrade (at
their recommendation) it didn't help. So that was, in my case, money poorly
spent.
