I am doing the training kit 70-270.
I am doing the exersise, Installing Windows Xp over a network and have run into some problems that I cant get over. I have created the network client disk and this works fine as I can ping between the PCs but when I try to map the drive I cant, just get error 53. I have checked name and password on distribution server and this is correct, what can I do from here This is via a router, I have tried doing this using a crossover cable, but dont seem to get an IP address on the client machine. It is really messing me up as I cant get on any further until I pass this exersise and understand it fully. Many thanks for any help Banny Banny |

Well you don't give much info on your network. Try accessing the target
server by IP address instead of name to see if that works as in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\share . Also make sure that the built in ICF firewall and any tcp/ip filtering is disabled on your computers assuming they are protected by a firewall. Note that tcp/ip filtering [in tcp/ip properties/advanced/options] will not block ping when enabled but will block inbound traffic not initiated by the client computer for tcp. You mention "router". If you mean a NAT router used to share the internet you are really talking about using the built in switch and not the router function to connect your lan computers. It may also help to boot into safe mode with networking to see if things work then. Safe mode will bypass most startup programs/services [ including software firewalls] in case one is interfering with network access. A lot of "protection" type programs act as a basic firewall also. Also see the links below. The first is on how to configure dns correctly in an Active Directory domain environment. The last is about netdiag. Learn to use and love netdiag and dcdiag [domain controllers only] support tools for network troubleshooting. --- Steve http://support.microsoft.com/default...en-us%3B291382 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=825036 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/arc.../sur_tbls.mspx http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;321708 "Banny" <> wrote in message news:0cc501c4f18a$90bf6620$... >I am doing the training kit 70-270. > I am doing the exersise, Installing Windows Xp over a > network and have run into some problems that I cant get over. > I have created the network client disk and this works fine > as I can ping between the PCs > but when I try to map the drive I cant, just get error 53. > I have checked name and password on distribution server and > this is correct, what can I do from here > This is via a router, I have tried doing this using a > crossover cable, but dont seem to get an IP address on the > client machine. > It is really messing me up as I cant get on any further > until I pass this exersise and understand it fully. > Many thanks for any help > Banny Steven L Umbach |

I will go through all this advice and will get there in the end. Thank you very much |
