Default More job cuts for tech sector

The U.S. technology sector suffered another round of widespread layoffs
during the third quarter, with computer firms slashing jobs most
aggressively, a report said on "High-tech job cuts are on the way up as the
end of the year approaches," said John A. Challenger, chief executive officer
of Challenger, Gray & Christmas. "Behind this trend is the fact that
technology companies have virtually no pricing power,"

Job cuts in technology jumped 60 percent between July and September to
54,701, compared with 34,213 layoffs in the second quarter. Computer
companies alone saw job cuts jump 127 percent, to 30,624.

Sadly its the consequence of the sector we're in. The whole point of IT is
to make things quicker and more efficient, so less people are required.
An example of this was last year, when I decided to impliment MS Software
Update Service (SUS). Before, whenever MS released a patch or hotfix for
Windows 2000, me and the other 2 engineers went out to each PC (300 on site)
and installed it manually. Now however SUS (and Group Policy) pushes out all
the updates, automatically, once a week, we don't have to do a thing. Same
with Virus scan, updates are pushed out via e-policy.
I'm currently working on RIS, it only takes 10 minutes to install Windows
along with all the apps, pre-configured, rather than an hour or 2 like
before.
Pretty soon the whole system will be entirely automated, and we won't need
any onsite IT staff!
Its crazy really, our job is to try and create a perfect system, but in
doing so, we're shooting ourselves in the foot!

That's a good idea. Give spammers a spammer address. I think I found the
nexus of the universe.

Just do what I do. Surround yourself with clueless users who can barely turn
on their PC. I'm guaranteed a job for life.
