Photo Software

I have a whole bunch of different photo editing programs.

IrfanView and/or XnView do most of what I want. They're
easy, super-fast and free. However, one thing they both
lack is a clone-stamp or other healing tool for fixing
minor blemishes whether they be dust bunnies, zits,
scratches on scanned pics, or whatever.

Is anyone aware of a plug-in that might work with IrfanView
or XnView? Or even another small fast prorgam that will
do the same kind of thing?

It's frustrating having to fire up a monster program
like Photoshop just to tidy up one small blemish.

Thanks. I have that one and will play with it some
more based on your vote. It doesn't appear to handle
RAW formats directly (I need NEF) although it seems
it might be able to use an XnView plugin for that.

You might give Paint.NET a try. I just downloaded it and have only
spent limited time trying it out, but so far I am impressed. It's
supported by an enthusiastic user community, some of whose members
have come up with very useful plugins.

Note that if you don't already have .NET 2.0 Framework, you will have
to download and install it first. It's free and the Paint.NET site has
a link to the download page.

Paint.NET itself is free, but its creators do ask for a donation.

Hope this is helpful

Yeah, it does sound seat but it requires XP or Vista and I'm
not willing to upgrade my existing Win 2000 system. At least,
not yet. Of course, that locks me out of Photoshop CS3 too.

Yes, I found that one. It's really very impressive
based on a very quick evaluation. I'll definitely
keep that one on my system. The interface is really
nice.

However, it doesn't have a clone/stamp/healing tool
which was the need that started this little quest
of mine. Nor do their "Pro" editions as far as I
can tell. But it does seem to do a very good job
of everything else and it was a great find!

I have since found the Akvis Stamp tool. It does
seem to work with both IrfanView and XnView.

http://akvis.com/en/stamp/index.php

Sadly, it doesn't do a very good job compared to
Photoshop, in my opinion. I'm certainly not willing
to pay $50 for it.

However, it does demonstrate the feasability of
building such a thing -- i.e. the IrfanView and
XnView plugin interfaces have the functionality
required to support an effective clone/stamp
plugin. Hopefully, it's just a matter of time
before someone produces a good tool at an
attractive price.

Duh. Correction: it *does* have a very nice clone stamp
tool. I've looked at too many different programs in
the past day or two.

The Free version does have a couple of limitations
that are important to me (batch processing and the
ability to save files in a high quality format such
as TIFF).

I might spring for the home version ($20/year).
