I am having the same problem. How do I go about reinstalling IE and
re-running the patch process.

download internet explorer 7 from microsoft. install it. I'm taking a guess
that during installation it will tell you that it cant uninstall the previous
version - just ignore it and move on.
Once installed, it will ask you to restart - do that
once it is up - install the patches. installation of windows desktop search
also worked after this (which is something I have had problems).
