I have been advised by MS that I dont have a genuine copy of XP, which is
possible given the computer was put together for me by a friend who I think
used a corporate copy. I intend purchasing XP Academic - what do I have to
do when I install this new copy of XP? Do I lose the data? Do I have to
uninstall the current (not genuine) copy?

You boot from the XP CD, do a REPAIR install, use the key code numbers from
the purchased version, and things should be just fine.
