After a SystemCrash I can't boot my notebook... neither from CD nor from
HDD. For a short time there is the "normal" XP-Boot Menu but regardles what
I select (Safe Boot, SB with Net.... etc) the system hangs up.

The CD is booting until Win-Setup is tarting Windows, then it hangs ag
ain...

Can't get the Console, can't repair... so what to do??? PANIC

Regards Arno

I do not have a whole lot of experience with failing notebooks, the only
time mine gives me a hickup is when the power is low. It used to be
recommended practice to regularly let the battery drain completely before
re-charging, or it could stop recieving charge as well as giving up any
charge - that is, lock up completely.

Can you try and remove the battery and plug it in, if you think this could
be the cause?

What happened when it crashed?

No Tony it's not the battery. The system hangs up during normal work and I
had to power-off it to reboot. After the reboot the stated error occurred.

As far as I found out something on the HDD either the MBR or the Bootsector
or the Partition-Table is defective.

As I said I tried to start Winsetup for getting into the recovery console
but every time the system tries to access the HDD it hangs up...

Are you getting far enough into the boot process that you can access the
BIOS?

If it was just the MBR it wouldn't affect the CD booting and if you see the
XP boot screen the process will have left the HD completely, I think.

The crash could possibly have reset your BIOS to default and lost the boot
information as a consequence.

I would start there!

Once again I'm sorry Tony but the BIOS entries are OK, they didn't change.
(The BIOS is detecting the HDD everytime, no other mode than 'Auto'
available).

The strange thing is I can boot from a non-XP Boot-CD into "normal" DOS
loading NTFS-Support that works fine. I can use several utilities to scan
the DD, read the Partition-Table, rewrite the MBR, scan for lost Partitions
etc etc... evrything works but XP won't bother 'bout this... it just doesn't
start...

I don't know wether x64 writes some special entrries into the MBR or
Bootsector which I can't repair with normal utilities or whatever else...

Just searching for help from MS but at the momemt there is no response...

First, check your BIOS settings are not corrupted.
Then, check the memory. Memtest is a good utility for this.
If these are not the cause, download and run your disk manufacturer's
testing utility.

Be aware that if there is a fault in the disk controller or the memory
controller on the motherboard you may get numerous errors reported when the
component itself is good.

If these tests do not reveal the faulty component, either you have a random
corruption or there is some fault in the notebook.
I suggest that you should remove the hard disk, see if another system can
read it, and back up your data.

You can then try reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling or let a
notebook specialist check the system.

Your description of symptom sounds like one of my situations. The
problem turned out to be the DRAM. The RAM I had purchased was not one
of the recommended brands for my board. Windows, any version, would not
install and setup - I had various BSOD faults. After I contacted the MB
manufacturer and purchased one of the brands of memory on their
recommended list, all my problems disappeared.

What MB do you have? What DRAM (DDR) do you have installed?

It's a all-in-one notebook with the original RAM on it, i never changed that
configuration. it worked fine for months without any problems...

Then I would suspect something in the notebook has failed - maybe the RAM.
