Hi.

My box is filling up with all these compressed folders - I think I can
remember the discussion passing through this group a while ago, but I cannot
remember if there was any general consensus on the strategy about how to
deal with them? They consist of B/U's of things that was updated, right? So,
would moving and burning them to disk be worthwhile at all, or should I just
flush the oldest 80 % down the bit drain, since they almost invariably do
work allright?

Another matter entirely, is that the machine was starting to behave rather
oddly. Things, like the mouse pointer, and the screensavers, started to
stutter without it actually feeling slow. Then Nero started refusing to burn
the ISO's - instead opting to put another image with it's own default
filename extension away, and that one I could later burn! I got irritated
and uninstalled Nero, and re-booted. Wow - this really felt like a cocktail
of vitamins and Viagra had been injected in that machine, everything speeded
up noticeably, and I then reinstalled Nero, and it burned the ISO's in a
well behaved manner like it used to.

Goes to show - not everything you don't like in software is a 'bug'. And not
every kind af strange behaviour is a virus!

Are you referring to these folders Tony - ie. $NtUninstallKB908519$?

Yes, they can be safely deleted or backed up to a different location.

Tony;
The uninstall files are the files needed if the update is to be uninstalled.
There is really no reason to save them once it is determined the update
caused no problems, somewhere around a few weeks to a few months at most.
But there is no harm in saving them other than it is something else you need
to manage.
I simply delete them periodically and have never wanted or needed to
uninstall a update after that time.

Yes, thank you both - that is exactly what I was thinking, but since being
on a very hi-speed connection this stuff is building up much, much faster
than I was used to, and now I need to take some action. I'll just flush the
lot. (the old lot!)

Greetings, Tony. . .

I'm confused. You don't get any more updates because you have a fast
connection to the internet. Your problem has to be something else.

Sometimes a MS-patch can cause problems with certain software, so therefor
you always need to run a decent test with all your software. I think the OP
installed a patch causing Nero to misbehave, and easiest would be to
uninstall the last patches to see if the new problem disappears again.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" goes well here (unless we're dealing with
security patches).

Well, of course you're right, John, but with the modem I was very
restrictive how I put it to the best use. 'Best', here being debatable, as
always. I don't know, this last year they've come trickling and I don't even
think about it anymore.

O.K. - That is quite possible, I didn't even give it a second thought that
these issues might have been connected. I will certainly keep an open eye on
that Nero 'mother'. This time, I just removed and re-installed Nero, and I
left four updates from the last month so if it starts being funny again I
will have that option in mind, thanks Jud.

I had a problem ages ago with a patch which made the desktop layout of Avid
Xpress DV go funny (this was in XP32). Somebody quickly discovered that it
was related to a MS-patch. I would have never thought that such a thing
could happen, but from now on, I check, double-check and triple-check my
system, before I install yet another patch, otherwise things get very
difficult to debug (well, for a bit of a layman like me ).
