New Mail Notification Sound Prob?

I'm actually not sure if this is an XP x64 problem or an Office
problem but I thought I'd start here.

I've just installed a bunch of new machines that have XP x64 sp1 with
all patches and updates installed, the company uses Office 2000 Pro so I
have installed that and updated it to sp2 with all additional updates.
The problem is if I go to control panel / Sounds / "New Mail
Notification" (whether it's set to the default sound or some other sound
i.e. "You've Got Mail!") and hit play you can in fact hear that sound
from the speakers, but in Outlook 2000 even though in E-Mail options /
Advanced E-Mail options "Play a sound" when new mail arrives is checked
no sound plays when mail arrives. I know that this works fine in Win2K
and XP Pro (non-x64) so I was wondering if anyone else had run into this
problem and if there were any known fixes?

Thanks,

- Chris LeFebvre

I have enabled that on Windows XP x86, I have never gotten Outlook to say
you've got mail, sound more like a Office issue. I know it probably works
with AOL though.

I had the exact same problem. Works fine on x86 with the gotmail.wav file.
On the x64 box does nothing. Crazy.

Thanks for the replies, I suspect that you're right and that this is an
Office issue and since Office 2000 has been superseded by Office XP and
Office 2003 I doubt that any fixes are forthcoming.

I'll just have to tell them to include a budget item for Office software for
next year. It's just a hard thing to explain to the users (whose old
computers were so old they didn't come with sound cards let alone speakers)
that just got brand new computers and flat screens (with built in speakers)
that a feature they find useful doesn't work on x64 because the Office
software is old.
