Sorry, I thought I'd said something previously...
It was a generic modem I saw the one time they sold it at geeks.com, for
like $18, maybe $24 with S&H. The key, and what caught my eye, was that it
used a SmartUSB56 V90 driver, which I had found previously to be something
purporting to have x64 drivers.
I'd bought an HP (USB) eModem on EBay for a refurb HP micro system (also
from geeks.com), which has no internal slots for a modem and none built-in.
I downloaded what I thought were the drivers from HP (the x64 version for
SmartUSB56 chip), but they wouldn't work with it on my x64 system. But when
I saw the generic modem on Geeks, I figured I'd give it a try, and got
lucky.
I must admit, I haven't installed the modem on my x64 system yet, being busy
with x32 systems... but it *did* use the x32 version of the same driver on
my XP Home laptop, so I'm betting the x64 version will work on x64 Windows.
I'll give it a shot this weekend if I can get the x64 system going... I let
the activation period lapse, and without a connection to the Internet at
boot time, it won't let me onboard. I guess I'll just re-install... all I'd
done with it so far was testing various periphs and apps, so nothing really
lost. Actually, I think maybe the x64 server OS still works... but there's
no guarantee the driver will work with it. I'll let you know.
Here's the log data from my x32 system:
