My Cruzer 256mb USB drive does not appear in explorer. It does appear in
device manager. I have tried uninstalling it from device manager and then
reinstalling, did not work. Tried having it plugged in before booting the
computer, did not work. The same happens with the USB media reader.

Both work correctly when booting into XP 32-bit Home (same machine) - so
hardware is OK.

They both used to work before some of the security updates to XP64. There
is nothing listed on this issue at Microsoft knowledge base. Any ideas or
fixes?

Here's the drill: What's your hardware config? We need to know to offer
any insights at all. You did say they worked in x64 before the patches?
Did you try uninstalling to see which one broke things?

Hello,
Is the drive seen in disk management?
Make sure that it's assigned a drive letter in disk managment.
Explorer may not show a drive without the drive letter.
Thanks,

Thanks - using device manager > disk drives > usb drive > properties >
volumes > populate assigns a drive letter to the usb drive. Then it appears
in explorer. However if explorer is closed then reopened the drive
assignment disappears. This also happens the drive is unplugged and
replugged in then it disappears again. Is there a more permenant fix?

hardware config: fx51 | asus sk8n | ocz ddr400 1gb | fx5700 256m | (2) wd
120gb raid0 SATA | (1) samsung 80gb IDE
OS: XP64 trial version, XP home SP2

others have the similar problems with other hardware configurations
http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php...9&#entry110909
so it doesn't seem unique to my hardware configuration

Hello,
And using disk management to assign a drive letter to the volume does what
in Explorer?
Did you recreate the volume on the USB drive?
Thanks,

"disk management" sorry what do you mean? I thought the last post explained
how I assigned a drive letter, although temporary...

OK - it is working now:
Disk Management - I've never used this before. (duh me) a path to disk
management if there are others like me...
control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management

The USB drive does appear in disk management and can open to it using right
click > explore. However the USB drive will only appear using this method.
Other explore windows do not display this drive.
It acted like it is there - just not all there..

Used disk manager to change the drive letter assignment to "T" and now it
works. The USB drive appears in all explore windows and reappears after being
unplugged and replugged in. This procedure also works to make the SD card in
my USB media reader appear (drive letter 'M').

Can anyone explain this behavior?
