Did you purchase it here?

http://www.itechwholesale.com/pd_mic...ofessional.cfm

If so, it is definitely bootleg.

well i get the message: "The Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP
Professional is currently only available to users of known invalid Product
Keys." when i try to register for the free swap, so im guessing that my
activation key isnt a known fake. So it wont let me swap, i.e. meaning that
the copy could be real.

I re-iterate, the CD and packaging, and booklet are 100% real and genuine,
no doubt (or they the best copies I have seen in my life). The activation
key worked and the OS is registered now with microsoft (which you cant do
with a bogus activation key/product ID). So the only thing in question is
why they didnt include the COA, which they claim: "we do not incluide COAs as
it cuts down cost". Costs from where, surelly if they're wholesale then the
copies will come from microsoft, and microsoft wont sell the copies to them
without COAs . And if they are selling the real genuine copies, does this
mean they are possibly retaining the COA sticker, and then re-shrink wrapping
the product, printing the key code on the packaging, and then flogging the
COA code somewhere?? seems risky and/or alot of effort to me.

Hi Nathan,

I just replied to you privately. They are selling the COA's separately to
double their return on investment.

Your disc and packaging is genuine as far as I can tell. Only the key is
bootlegged. Follow-up with the guys in the anti-piracy division.

PS-it is possible to activate an register a bogus copy. I did so once as a
test, then forwarded the tools used to the head of WPA at MS.

Several reasons:

1>The fact that the price for XP pro is way below my wholesale price as a
system builder is a dead giveaway. There is no such thing as surplus OS
since OEMs can return unused product to the vendors for credit.

2>At no point do they state a COA is included and it is illegal to sell the
OS without the COA .

3>They state they are selling branded copies of XP Home (Dell, etc). It is
illegal for them to sell branded copies of the OS as the branded discs can
only be sold with a complete PC from the manufacturer whose name is on the
disc.

Yeah that site is definitely shady. The question I would like to ask is, how
people really manage to encounter these type of sites with the plethora of
well known online retailers such as newegg.com, directron.com, cdw.com and
ncix.com.

Hi Andre,

Such sites can be found any way from email offers (I get them by the
hundreds) to a simple search on Google or Amazon.

While legit retailers are well known to those of us in the business or those
that hang out online constantly, the average user is at the mercy of the
search engines.

The main thing to remember when purchasing online is that if it sounds too
good to be true, it probably is.

Let me make a quote from Windows XP Help and Support:
Don't be a victim of software piracy, and the possible legal and technical
risks that may come with it. Be sure that you are acquiring genuine software
that is properly installed, fully supported, and legal.

The following warning signs can help you identify counterfeit or illegal
software:

a.. Prices that are "too good to be true."
b.. Suspicious methods of delivery and/or payment.
c.. Retail software delivered in jewel cases rather than in full-color
retail boxes.
d.. Software marked with phrases such as "For distribution with a new PC
only" or "Special CD for licensed customers only" that do not accurately
describe the transaction.

Friendly reminder.. If you determine it necessary, your credit card company
may be able to assist in recovering the charge. I'd be keeping a closer
watch than usual on the CC account activity. A company that would engage in
this type of activity, well, you know the rest..
