The 17-55mm/2.8 lens doesn't come with a lens hood. You have to buy
your own. The Canon EW-83J lens hood is pricy ($50) and is only
effective for the wider angle settings.

As an alternative, consider the 77mm Hoya Multi Lens Hood. This is a
collapsable rubber lens hood and costs only $20. Besides that, it is
adjustable. I find that fully collapsed, it works great at 17mm with
no detectable vignetting. Fully extended, it is excellent at 35mm to
55mm. It is also possible to nudge it out from the fully collapsed
position to an intermediate position, where it works without
vignetting from around 28mm out.

I thought I'd post this because it is a good hood solution for the
17-55mm, and because there is little specific info on this Hoya on the
web.
