How to create a form Alert - Not using Alert Boxes

I am wanting to create an alert without using pop boxes. For example,
if the user does not enter there 'Name' in the text field on a form
and they hit the Submit Button, they will get an alert message next to
the Submit Button telling them the 'Name' field is required.

Thanks,
Mersh
