Hi
I have a wireless modem with four LAN 10/100M ports. Up to now I've used External Hard Drives with USB or Firewire to connect to my MacBook Pro and Toshiba Windows machines directly. Can I just plug a Network drive into one of those ports, switch it on and it will show up on the computers? If so, what do I need to look out for when purchasing (I know nothing of network protocols and such, e.g. whether 10/100M (which is what is written on the modem) is compatible with 100BASE-TX (which is what is listed in the tech specs of the drives I've found on Amazon. Any pointers, recommendations, would be well received, particularly drives which don't require a lot of effort to sync with both Mac OSX and XP/Vista (I have simply formatted one partition on an external HD to each OS for backup purposes and that works fine). Hi
You can buy a NAS device, it is a small device that can be plugged into a regular port on Router, and the USB Hard Drive plugs to the device. The Hard Drive would become a Network Device that can be accessed by all Network computers. Example, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124036 Research before you buy since there are many devices starting at $50 and going into the hundreds. Jack (MVP-Networking).
