I have a Cisco 3640 with 2 Ethernet interfaces.
--- 192.168.1.X --- 192.168.2.X My home cable network is on the 192.168.1.x network. I have a seperate network (192.168.2.X) on the other. I have static routes set up for the secondary network to reach the DG 192.168.1.1 and they reach the Internet fine. BUT, they cannot communicate via NETBios and RPC etc. between eachother. I tried setting a IP-HELPER address on each interface to hosts on each subnet but no luck. Should I do a Protocol-Helper too for 138, 137? What am I missing here? Am I a stoopit kook that doesn't deserve to route NETBT between 2 subnets? Do I need a host file? WINS? Thanks, Martha's Son Poopie Shooter |

Instead of using broadcasts to resolve NETBios names on a subnetted network,
either use a DNS server, a WINS server, or local HOSTS and/or LMHOSTS files to resolve NETBios names into IP addresses. -- Politician Spock Thug #24601 "Poopie Shooter" <> wrote in message news:0a8a01c3df6d$8fd8df50$... > I have a Cisco 3640 with 2 Ethernet interfaces. > > --- 192.168.1.X > --- 192.168.2.X > > My home cable network is on the 192.168.1.x network. I can't even ping hosts between the subnets though ... but they reach the Internet fine on net #2 ... >-----Original Message----- >Instead of using broadcasts to resolve NETBios names on a subnetted network, >either use a DNS server, a WINS server, or local HOSTS and/or LMHOSTS files >to resolve NETBios names into IP addresses. > >-- >Politician Spock >Thug #24601 > > >"Poopie Shooter" <> wrote in message >news:0a8a01c3df6d$8fd8df50$... >> I have a Cisco 3640 with 2 Ethernet interfaces. >> >> --- 192.168.1.X >> --- 192.168.2.X >> >> My home cable network is on the 192.168.1.x network. Is the static route you set up to reach IP address 192.168.1.1 or to reach
the subnet 192.168.1.X? -- Politician Spock Thug #24601 "But" <> wrote in message news:12c001c3df74$47965220$... > > I can't even ping hosts between the subnets though ... but > they reach the Internet fine on net #2 ... > > > >-----Original Message----- > >Instead of using broadcasts to resolve NETBios names on a > subnetted network, > >either use a DNS server, a WINS server, or local HOSTS > and/or LMHOSTS files > >to resolve NETBios names into IP addresses. > > > >-- > >Politician Spock > >Thug #24601 > > > > > >"Poopie Shooter" <> > wrote in message > >news:0a8a01c3df6d$8fd8df50$... > >> I have a Cisco 3640 with 2 Ethernet interfaces. > >> > >> --- 192.168.1.X > >> --- 192.168.2.X > >> > >> My home cable network is on the 192.168.1.x network. Yes indeed the static route is for the DG 192.168.1.1.
Should I make a static route for the E0/1 which is 192.168.2.1? Thanx for your help man. This is really basic stuff, but I've actually never set up routing Windows between 2 subnets on one router with 2 E ints. >-----Original Message----- >Is the static route you set up to reach IP address 192.168.1.1 or to reach >the subnet 192.168.1.X? > >-- >Politician Spock >Thug #24601 > > >"But" <> wrote in message >news:12c001c3df74$47965220$... >> >> I can't even ping hosts between the subnets though ... but >> they reach the Internet fine on net #2 ... >> >> >> >-----Original Message----- >> >Instead of using broadcasts to resolve NETBios names on a >> subnetted network, >> >either use a DNS server, a WINS server, or local HOSTS >> and/or LMHOSTS files >> >to resolve NETBios names into IP addresses. >> > >> >-- >> >Politician Spock >> >Thug #24601 >> > >> > >> >"Poopie Shooter" <> >> wrote in message >> >news:0a8a01c3df6d$8fd8df50$... >> >> I have a Cisco 3640 with 2 Ethernet interfaces. >> >> >> >> --- 192.168.1.X >> >> --- 192.168.2.X >> >> >> >> My home cable network is on the 192.168.1.x network. Instead of making that route specific to the IP addess 192.168.1.1, make it
for the subnet 192.168.1.X, that way any request destined for that subnet will be routed, not just ones destined for the 192.168.1.1 host. -- Politician Spock Thug #24601 "Thx" <> wrote in message news:110401c3df7a$28c2b900$... > Yes indeed the static route is for the DG 192.168.1.1. > > Should I make a static route for the E0/1 which is > 192.168.2.1? > > Thanx for your help man. > > This is really basic stuff, but I've actually never set up > routing Windows between 2 subnets on one router with 2 E > ints. > > >-----Original Message----- > >Is the static route you set up to reach IP address > 192.168.1.1 or to reach > >the subnet 192.168.1.X? > > > >-- > >Politician Spock > >Thug #24601 > > > > > >"But" <> wrote in > message > >news:12c001c3df74$47965220$... > >> > >> I can't even ping hosts between the subnets though ... > but > >> they reach the Internet fine on net #2 ... > >> > >> > >> >-----Original Message----- > >> >Instead of using broadcasts to resolve NETBios names > on a > >> subnetted network, > >> >either use a DNS server, a WINS server, or local HOSTS > >> and/or LMHOSTS files > >> >to resolve NETBios names into IP addresses. > >> > > >> >-- > >> >Politician Spock > >> >Thug #24601 > >> > > >> > > >> >"Poopie Shooter" <> > >> wrote in message > >> >news:0a8a01c3df6d$8fd8df50$... > >> >> I have a Cisco 3640 with 2 Ethernet interfaces. > >> >> > >> >> --- 192.168.1.X > >> >> --- 192.168.2.X > >> >> > >> >> My home cable network is on the 192.168.1.x network. > I > >> >> have a seperate network (192.168.2.X) on the other. > >> >> > >> >> I have static routes set up for the secondary > network to > >> >> reach the DG 192.168.1.1 and they reach the Internet > >> fine. > >> >> BUT, they cannot communicate via NETBios and RPC etc. > >> >> between eachother.
