Hello all, and thank you for your replies in advance,
For the past several months, using OE, I've had an issue with access to my
news server.
If I read a message, and let it sit for a couple of minutes, the next
message I try to read will hang and time out.
As long as I keep quickly browsing it's fine, if I select another news
group, and come back, it's fine.
So long as I keep reading messages, or changing groups, all is ok, but if I
let it sit in a group, it will hang and time out.
Often, this occurs quickly enough to happen in between messages..

I'll predict the first reply here: get a real newsreader!
I've tried agent newsreader because of this, I got pretty much the same
results.
I'm simply much more comforable with the way OE handles newsgroups.. I like
it.
My news server is news-server.columbus.rr.com, and my wife works for Time
Warner, answering the calls about this stuff.
She hasn't heard of any such problem... I'm a pretty damn computer savvy
guy, having built more machines than I can think of, and an avid
overclocker, but I really don't know where to look on this one..
I'm only using XP firewall through a trendnet gigabit switch and a netgear
RP614 v2 router..There are no other machines working on this at the moment,
there have been in the past, and as soon as I get off my lazy butt and pull
out a screwdriver, there will be

I have the same problem sometimes, I believe it is related to the ISP's
server, not the news reader. It only happens once in a while.

Have you tried using OE on a different machine?

Many times little annoying problems like this are actually caused by the OE
does things.
In your options, you will find a place to turn off storing message bodies
locally. That only wastes YOUR space. If you do need it back, it's still on
the server until the server deletes it.
Next, clean up your storage files. Compact the folders frequently. Wipe out
and delete the group entirely and reset it. OE begins to get sloppy once it
has a huge file.

If you still have the problem, then compare it with another newsreader like
"40tude dialog".

Are you on dial-up? Is that columbus ohio? If so, do note that the recent
weather storms play havoc with phone lines. Then again, it could very well
be a problem with the news server itself.

Your news connectivity has changed recently (I think). Previously your
RR contract provided you with newsservice via geographic RR newsservers.
Then RR contracted out its news to newshosting.

That means you aren't maintaining your newsserver connectivity, which is
more commonly a problem for dialups than cable modems, which I presume
you are.

Another troubleshooting experiment you could do would be to connect with
some other newsserver, such as a free one.

The newsswerver quits on you and when you try to access it again, it
doesn't work.

It isn't related to your newsreader.

OE causes much controversy and it is popular.

I think the columbus RR newsserver might send you over to newshosting
now.

I would experiment with another different free newsserver -- or I would
experiment with another different RR newsserver, many RR clients can
access some other RR newsserver.
