I have been copying files from a directory on my laptop to a directory on my
USB hard drive - both folder have the same name. It copied about three
fourths of the files and then started giving me a msg:"Cannot copy XXX: the
directory or file cannot be created."

Does anyone know what my problem is, and/or how to bet around it?

New drive? Have you initialized and formatted it?
Is the disk nearly full?
Power plugged in? Cables seated properly?
Have you tried copying a smaller test file?
How many files in that folder/directory? Could need a new folder.
