new to wireless networking..

Hi guys..

i just got my new laptop ( centrino )
i have a wireless router connected to my desktop
my laptop came with norton firewall and my desktop has sygate firewall.

i am able to share internet connection,but how do i set up a wireless
network
i want to be able to see my desktop on my laptop and vice-versa

i ran the wireless network wizard on both the machines and
gave it same SSID number and a gave a manual WEP key

what else do i need to do?

do i need any additional hardware? or cabels?

Just follow the tutorial all work out.

Well not sure exactly what you mean by "see my desktop" on the other machine
but here is my best guess as to what you are asking and what you need to do.
If you want to share files between your computers you must set permissions
on the folders you want to share, right click on the folder to share, go to
sharing and set properties accordingly. Do that on both machines so you can
get files back and forth.



Now if you actually want to see the other desktop you will need to enable
remote desktop on each machine. You didn't mention what OS so for XP SP2 go
to the network connection, right click, advanced tab, firewall settings,
exceptions tab, there allow Remote Desktop. On other firewalls (non-MS) you'll
have to read the documentation for that.



That should allow you to share files between two computers and "see" the
desktop for each computer on the other one.

If you can connect to the net with both machines, as you said, then all
other configuration of the machines is the same as if they were connected by
wiring.

That exactly what i wanted.to be able to see ther "other machine" i.e
remote desktop.

desktop --> XP pro (SP1)
laptop --> XP home (SP2)

i ran wireless network wizard on both machines and assigned them both
same SSID number and same WEP key (or was it WAP i think)

do i need to do anything else?

There is a bit of confusion here.
Remote desktop is not the same as networking.
For remote desktop

Hi

I had the same sort of problem and it turned out to be the firewall
settings. Goto the settings for the Norton Firewall and under the networking
tab check your IP range is allowed, if it is'nt use the add button to add
the correct range of addresses. As for your other firewall there will be
similar sttings.
