In switching from a single core 4000+ to a dual core 4800+ will i have to re
install windows? I've had to do so in the past by changing certain hardware.
Anyone experienced this type of change, thanks for any info.

Windows XP Pro

I would not reinstall Windows unless it starts giving you problems.
However, if you want to take full advantage of your processor, it would
be wise to reinstall with the 64-bit version.

I've upgraded PC's from 32-bit to 64-bit without reinstalling Windows
and have had problems with some, but not all of them. Just see what
happens. Good luck.

Clean reinstall, the processor change in itself shouldn't matter but the
HAL may not detect dual core / 2 CPU. The HAL AFAIK isn't an inplace
upgrade, it's detected only at install time.

If you aren't running apps to take advantage of it, it may be okay not
doing anything.

The in-place upgrade will replace the HAL (bullet #6 in the MS article
to which I provided a link). For another article on using an in-lace
in-place upgrade to change the HAL, read:
