Greetings from sunny Vancouver Island
My questions is this. Is there any way of blocking spam and unwanted
emails before it reaches my computer? I have Norton for blocking it but it
just downloads these unwanted email to a separate SPAM folder and I still
have to delete them. Or am I asking too much? I use Windows XP, Outlook
Express and Norton Internet Security. Thanks.

Your ISP may have some spam filters in place but they will want you to
set up some criteria as you know your needs. If you have webmail access
then it takes some time but that's not a bad way to set the filter
criteria. Initially, you want to have your email reader set to leave
email on the server until things are set up and configure via webmail.

You really should consider using Thunderbird as a mail reader:

It is an excellent program. It's free. It will allow you to download
headers only and filter on those. It has an adaptive filter that allows
you to train it to recognize your spam. It, it, it, it's great!

Sign up with an ISP who traps the spam for you.

I use mailwasher, there is a free version.
http://www.mailwasher.net/index.php
You can view your e.mails before they are downloaded into OE. You can
delete and bounce. Although you still have to delete in the free version ,
you just click the check boxes which is quicker than deleting in OE.

But don't bounce, please. The headers are usually faked but many times
represent *real* email servers that have nothing to do with the spam. It
just causes undeserved headaches.

If one wants to just delete then Magic Mail Monitor has a respected
history. It's a little gem.

Please do not bounce.

Much spam is sent using the address of a victim as the FROM: address, so
a bounce will only serve to really annoy that person, and to further
clog up the pipe. No spammer would ever see any of these bounces.

Whoops, didn't see that you had already posted that. <g>

"Bounces" tick me off almost as much as Challenge/Response email
systems.

Please reply so we can whitelist your address that a spammer used to
send email to our challenge-response system (signed)

We both even said "please"
