Because Dell wont provide back up OS CD's I have considered making a clone
back up of my hard drive using Acronis True Image 9.0 to DVD's . I haven't
used this software before so a couple of questions.

If my hard drive becomes unusable... can a new hard drive be fitted and the
clone image including OS just be transfered to it or will there be boot up
probs.

Could the clone image be transfered to another computer?

BB

Dell 9150 XP media edition 2005 sp2

Bob

1: Acronis has a 'create a boot CD' facility which you use to start your PC
before reloading the Image onto your new HD.

2: From the 'Licence' point of view Microsoft usually only allow one
computer per licence (the sticker on the side of the case is considered the
'Licence')
Also it can not be transfered to another computer if it is an OEM copy,
which being a DELL is most likely. OEM copies are 'tied' to the one computer
and the licence dies when the computer dies.
Only full retail copyies can be transfered to another computer, but only
'after' removal from the previous computer. i.e. one licence one computer.

3: From a practical point of view the only computer the image would reliably
transfer to is another DELL of the same model.
Other computers 'may' successfully boot from the image but it would have to
have hardware fairly similar to the original to avoid problems.
Trawl the news groups though and you will find people saying it has been
done.

4: Then there is the 'Activation' issue where, if the cloned image
determines it is in fact loaded onto a different computer, it will require
you to reactivate with Microsoft................ .

Best
Paul.

Hello Bob,
I am using Acronis True Image 9.0, to Clone my HD C:\
to a removable HD. After Cloning I will remove the C:\ HD,
and slide in the Cloned Copy HD and turn the Computer on
after boot up a little window pops up asking
"Windows found new Hardware do you want
to restart your Computer Now?" I click yes the Computer
will restart and I will have a working backup.

My new OS is about 8 GB in size, the old computer's OS was
about 18 GB. My setup method of OS backup is more
expensive, but in the long run I save time and I do not have to
buy DVD or CD. I can not advise You, if reinstalling a DVD
backup on the same Computer or on different one will work.

Try to Google for "Best Hard Drive Backup Method"
Or Acronis Support they are very Helpful.

Good Luck, x@y

Thanks for that...does that mean every so often you swap the hard drives
over?

What happened to the 10GB that was on the original OS

No I do not swap HD's.

When there is a new program installed on my computer,
or Microsoft Windows Security Updates, I will wait a couple of days
to make sure everything is working fine then clean my OS,
with Antivirus program and Spyware scan, and Clone the clean
OS to my backup HD. If there are no new Programs installed,
and no Windows Security Updates, I still Clone my System at
least once a Month, to keep my email I receive
and the Antivirus & Spyware Programs Updates close to the
recent date Updates.

> What happened to the 10GB that was on the original OS

The original OS 18 GB is 4 years old and is retired like me,
the whole Computer is stored away, I have upgrated to a new
Computer with two removable sliding HD's Racks,
my C:\ HD is on Rack #1
Rack #2 I use for cloning only, my Computer is set to boot
from Rack # 1, if is nothing there then it will look to Rack #2,
if nothing on Rack #2, then goes to the internal installed HD,
in my case at the moment that is empty.
All 3 HD's on my System are 160 GB each, in Volume.
One Internal, one C:\ on Rack #1, one Backup Stored away.

If my working System should crash, all I have to do take my
cloned HD, and with Acronis boot up CD, I can Clone my
Backup to my HD C:\ , the only thing I will loose one month
of E-mails, Antivirus & Spyware Updates. Better than Nothing
at all.

If You have more Questions Please Post back.

Good Luck, x@y

I like it ..clever setup and would seem to be almost fool proof..I aways
backup my data but was worried if I needed to reinstal my operating system
in the event of a complete hard drive failure. Thanks again for the
information.
