If you were going to build a CD containing tools/utilities/programs,
to use in diagnosing and fixing a PC running XP,what would
you put on it?

Regards,
MIke

Nope - I want a CD of Windows programs that I can install
on a PC to use in investigating and fixing it.

I make up a fresh one every now and then. It has several trial versions
of antivirus programs, antispyware programs, programs like Everest, View
XP Key, SP2, Spinrite, password recovery tools, memory test programs, EZ
Cleaner, HiJackThis, on and on. There's no need to list every program
because by the time I got through typing them out, half of them would be
outdated. I leave old utility disks laying around so I can always find
two or three.

You do not want to install anything more on a hosed pc. Knoppix is a good
idea for getting data off it, on a usb stick or burner, or somewhere on the
net.
There is a "windows liveCD" as well, google for BartPE.
I torrented one "BartPE2004" complete with network support for common
adapters, tools like locksmith, cd burning program, partition managers,
ghost and others.
Another good idea is Hirens Boot&%RootCD.

We have a utility cd we reissue once every 2 weeks or sooner if needbe
where I work. It contains spybot, adaware, ewido, windows me,98se cab
files, Bughunter, hijackthis, crap cleaner, cleanup, eru, erunt, fprot
for dos, norton removal tool, most recent norton def updater, most recent
version of sun java, flash player, shockwave player, winamp v2.91,
bsplayer, xvid codec, windows installer cleanup utility, Killdisc, norton
disk editor, norton ghost, spinrite (a fully licensed copy!), a large
collection of registry fixes for win2k/xp. A partition table restoration
utility, and some other utilities/goodies that I have forgotten the names
of.

The cdrom is also self booting; using a windows ME boot image. Great for
fat based systems. for NTFS it's complimented with a bartPE disc.

Mike

For what it's worth, here is a list of folders from my Utilities disk.
The folder name in general reflects the program name.
Most if not all are freeware.
As others have commented it requires some effort to keep up to date.
So I suggest you burn a CD, then keep updates for things like Anti Virus &
Anti Spyware programs on an USB stick.

Cheers
Paul.
