Is there any way to transfer new music to the IPod without losing the
tracks already there? I'm running out of disk space on my laptop and
need to delete my mp3s (hundreds) to free up room. I'm worried that I
will lose my present tracks the next time I want to add music. What am
I missing? How is this done or do people really just wipe the slate
clean each time?!

DON'T CLOSE THAT WINDOW
open your music folder
click and drag music from one window to the other

of course you don't lose your current tracks. just transfer the new
music using itunes.

I'm obviously doing something wrong, because when I did that, it erased
the 300 or so I already had on and replaced them with the new ones. I
just don't understand how to manipulate iTunes to do what I want. The
music is no longer on the hard drive, so wont that make the iPod erase
what doesnt match whats in iTunes?

Turn off "Automatically update all songs and playlists" and select
"Manually manage songs and playlists" that way you will not affect the
music on the iPod. The wording of the preferences may vary depending on
which OS you are using.
