Is the message in many newsgroups that xtra is closing down their newsgroup
service just a hoax?

Why is it that the original posts have disappeared? Here's another bit: "Just
saw this as a post to nz.comp - presumably only visible to Xtra users of
their nntp server: "

I can see nz.comp just fine at google. And it was posted to some *non-nz* groups
as well. Why?

From the headers of the *original* poster:

From a http://xtra.co.nz/help lookup:

--- resolving host "xtra.co.nz", please wait...

I got lucky and found *one* set of headers someone else had posted from the
original. Here they are:

I don't see anything that convinces me that these *aren't* totally forged. And a
helluva lot that *does.*

Thanks to all who said "Ask xtra"

I tried to, last night. Broadband customers had a 30 minute wait, they said,
no time given for dail up customers!
Everybody must have been trying to get through. You would think if it was a
hoax, they would say so along with their recorded "network line problems"
news.

The general opinion here (New Zealand) seems to be "Dump xtra". I'll wait to
see if it is a hoax.

One thing's for sure, if I had had shares in Telecom (xtra's parent) I'd
have sold the lot this morning. I wonder if this is just the writing on the
wall.

I spoke to Xtra's Complex Technical Support team on 0800 116 110
option 2 (part of their business services). After grudgingly admitting
to the existence of newsgroups they conceded that yes, they were going
to be shutting them down.
Other posts in other groups have now confirmed similar conversations
with other parts of Telecom's 'help' service.
Nothing on their website yet. Surprise, surprise.
E-mail (E-Mail Removed) if you want to make your views known.
E-mail the IT editor at any newspaper if you want your views known to
more than a dustbin.

There seems to be a spate of ISPs around the world ending their in-house
news-server provision and either out-sourcing to specialist providers, or
ceasing provision entirely.

Fortunately there are still public news-servers that can be used
independently of any ISP. The one I use charges 10 Euros a year (text
groups only) <http://www.individual.net/>.
