i get a fair old bit of spam,on the increase lately,which is to be expected
as this comes from having my email address on my website.
I want to know if i change the links so they are not clickable,how would
that affect the amount of spam i get?

Would it :
a) keep coming at the same rate because my email addy is already out there
being bounced around between spammers causing it to be used endlessly
b) keep increasing for the same reason as a)
c) stop coming because the harvesting bots cant gather the address from my
site
d) none of the above !

I'm not sure if removing the clickable link would be enough,or if i would
actually have to munge it.

I think one answer i am going to get here is to change the email address
which i have thought about.

I have a lot of pages on my site with my email address on it,been there for
10 years,and for most of that time,only got a bit of spam.Lately though its
getting a bit ridiculous.I have OE set up pretty well,most of it goes to the
deleted items folder,but some legit ones slip though sometimes.
If i can help it by going through all the site's pages killing those
links,i will,but it'll be a pain in the arse.

I'd think they're harvesting anything that fits string@string, and if
that's true then link or nonlink doesn't matter. The best would be to
take it off your pages completly by using a mail form. But that would be
a lot of work for an old site that has "lots of pages" of the address
hanging out promiscuously in full view. That leaves encoding the address
(but some say that harvestors are hip to that trick) or munging.

If you just munge it, you can do that in one fell swoop with a global
search/replace utility. Aim it at your local mirror of the site and tell
it to recursively replace with
. Then upload those pages. I dunno what your
site looks like, but you'll only be uploading pages, not images, so that
probalby won't involve as much bandwidth as you might think.

I just downloaded and tried one,but it only replaces the visible text,rather
than the actual link.As in your example right below this ,it changes the
text to and thats fine but when i click on it or
hover the mouse over the link,it still comes up as

that it goes to ? Or both ?

yeah it would just be the .htm files,any pics etc would just stay where they
are,so would not take long to upload a batch replacement.

Another way is to replace your email address with a contact form on your
web site. You can basically mark that address as "spam infected" now
though.

Hi,yeah if i can find a way of 'mass-adding' something like that it would be
good.I have loads of pages to add it to.I guess i could leave it off most of
them and just do a few of them,but i like to have a contact on each page
within the site.I'm going to look for one now,let me know if you know of any
that are good to use

naked mailto on website has been demonstrated to be the #1 cause of
spam.

The problem is that your current spam is from being on spamlists. Those
spamlists were developed by many methods. If you completely eliminated
the exposure of your addy from the website it would not remove that addy
from spamlists.

Changing would have a great effect on the current crop of spam -- it
would also affect your current correspondents.

You can go for a long time with an address without much spam until it
starts circulating to various lists.

OE is quite weak about filtering spam. It is good for whitelisting and
it is good for ruling items which aren't addressed to you. If you have
much spam problem you need a real filter, such as SpamPal.

various strategies for hiding and eliminating naked mailto.

You only need the contact once on your site really. Take a look at mine
for an example. Nothing of interest there but just check the contact page

Then you're not using it correctly. It's not going to replace the link if
you don't tell it to.

Ignore. It's almost 5 AM.

Reduce the number of places you have your contact information and replace
them with a form. That way NO address is revealed.

One point I don't see mentioned so far in the thread: spam comes from
posting email addresses in Usenet.

You are obviously munging your address here, but you are using a domain
name (here.com) owned by WORLD PUBLICATIONS LLC of Winter Park, Florida.

I surely think that company does not appreciate the extra spam its mail
servers are receiving because you used it here in Usenet.

Call yourself or .net or .org (reserved for the purpose)
and not someone's real domain name.
