Anyone have any ideas as to why?

There's a setting somewhere that let's you download and install later.
(The control panel/Automatic Update/"Big Schpeel from MS about 'AU' so that
you'll start paying for it by subscription service when they swith over"

I never used the 'automatic updates' feature. I always did it 'mAnuAlLy' by
going to the MS website

I never liked the thought of my computer running out to the update site
whenever the update program wanted...

I have tried to do that. It still doesn't work?????

Any errors showing in C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

Microsoft provides free technical support for problems involving
Windows Update.

Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and click on the "Get Help
and Support" link in the left side column. You will get several
options for accessing support. I have found the email submissions get
acted on quite quickly and the responses are usually good.
