here is the urgent message i got

they have a dell computer with windows xp

thanks, all
=============================
i really, really screwed something up with the com.
The display is at like 26 colors and the lowest
resolution.
And i cant change it. I wish i had a file name to give
that is messed up, but i can get the error popup to
come up. I have no clue what the hell is going on.
I've tried all the options in Trobleshoot but none of
them work.

Is there a some kind of file that i should try? I've
downloaded a few updates off of Microsoft's site but
nothing works. I am so lost, and i've been yelling at
the screen for about an hour.

Sounds like the video driver needs to be reinstalled. Have you tried a
system restore?

This could be a seriously messed up display adaptor driver. Try going to
Device Manager, expanding the 'display adapter' and removing whatever is
there, reboot the computer and it should come up with the 'New Hardware
Found' dialog and re-install the drivers. If it's an older Dell (i.e. more
than a cpl of years) you will probably need the Windows/rescue disk that
came with the PC or the graphics card disk if it has anything other than
the standard graphics adapter.

System restore to install a video driver? Jeez, ****ing Dell and
Emachines has ruined the way people think about computers.

Top posting fixed (I think)

as I said before, tell them to remove the old one from device manager,
reboot the computer and let windows do it's 'found new hardware' thing.
Even a windows default driver will give them minimal functionality.

Follow the clicks.
Start button>settings>control panel>I use "classic" settings so this may
differ>system>hardware>device manager>display adaptors>Right click on
the offending adaptor and Left click uninstall.
- you'll need to have video drivers to re-install afterwards or this
won't work.

The "restore" option is the other option. It was designed for
situations like this in mind. start>accessories>system tools>system
restore. You'll lose program functionality from whenever the restore
point was set, but no data loss, if this option is used.

I'd choose: Door #1. Re-installing programs is a pain.
