I just purchased a new HP Pavilion a1220n and I'm running XP Home. I leave
my system on 24/7. At the end of the day I leave my system at Desktop, but
when I get up in the morning the system is at the Welcome screen and I have
to use my password to get the system started again. In addition I get the
following error message:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response...d0769&SID=1776
I have used http://safety.live.com as instructed and I get a clean bill of
health with no virus found. Help?

Are you checking this with some other virus scan program? Try Stinger from
McAfee.

Do you have auto-updating anti-virus software installed on your computer?

You should not leave you're computer on 24/7 unless it's behind the
protection of NAT router at the very least.

So you're saying you are leaving a NT based O/S with a direct connection to
the Internet (not behind a NAT router) on 24/7 and it's not password
protected on non-use timeout? If you're saying that, that's bad business.

You can try Trend Micro House an online AV scanner. It seems to find things
that are missed by other scanners.

You may want to harden the NT based O/S to attack as much as possible.

I do use McAfee and it is my understanding that it is self-updating?

It should be, but not always. As a subscription service it can expire. Or it
can be hacked by malicious software rendering it ineffective (true of pretty
much all AVs.)

Have you checked the McAfee to be sure it's up to date? Do you have the
Windows XP SP2 installed?

Group: I just need a security check please, here's what pcbutts1 sent to
me, attached is a file called aproposfix.zip. I am very reluctant to run
the .bat file. Suggestions or advice? No offense pcbutts1, I just don't
want to make a fatal mistake.

Yeah - go for it. He isn't going to send anything malicious. It's a valid
tool. I've used it myself.
