The usual response for OE users is to go to their webmail interface and
delete an offending message that probably has malformed headers.
Probably a spam. (This problem does not occur with, say, Thunderbird.)

On the other hand, you may have ticked the box to "leave messages on
server" in which case, you should UNtick it.

If you're being spammed, then use Mailwasher in front of OE to delete
the emails at the POP3 server. You can take OE out of it's sending and
receiving emails on started-up and on a timed basis and set Mailwasher
to check emails at start-up and on a timed basis. You delete the ones
you don't want and tell MW to start OE and you use the Send/Recv button
to send and receive emails with OE manually. You take the control and
don't let OE to it for you automatically.

Mailwasher has a full trial version you can try.
