Proxy Servers - Security ?

I've been reading somewhat about the privacy aspects of hiding behind a
proxy server....

How secure is this......Good enough to hide my IP from the authorities ?
Good enough to hide my IP from the authorities with a "warrent" ?

If you have a good .pps/presentation showing how a proxy sever actually
achieves this...I'd love to see it...

Thanx.

I'm not sure, but I think it's as simple as being a middleman server.
It receives each request, makes that request on your behalf, receives
it and then sends it on to you.
As long as no one is monitoring the traffic, and there are no logs
kept, there is nothing to backtrack.

Of course, you're completely trusting the operator of the proxy server,
which seems foolish if you have nefarious deeds in mind.

I suggest the up-front approach -- admit to everything you do and do
only good things. It's really easy and comfortable.

Likely, any proxy service logs your IP.

Never heard of a warrent, but with a WARRANT, likely the proxy service
would release any and all information.

Correct. Any legitimate proxy service logs for monitoring usage and
abusage of their service. Abused proxies, of course, don't log.

Typically a privacy proxy service retains a very limited form of logs
for a few days to help them with the 'viability' of their own service
and business, which of course are subject to subpoena, but the subpoena
had better be pretty fast, because they are quickly overwritten when
they no longer server a useful purpose for the service. Places which
claim to not log keep those kinds of logs.

In addition to the subpoena attack, if the resources of the adversary or
country or agency are great enough, they can monitor the traffic
upstream of the proxy service. Presumably with sufficient 'power' the
agency or entity can put a box and a gag on the proxy service itself.

My personal opinion is that the country of the proxy service doesn't
mean anything. There's a lot of debate about that. In order to know
the true answers to the debate you would have to be privvy to a lot of
very secret information. No matter what, there's an element of trust
involved any time you employ a proxy service. And there's another
different element of insecurity involved any time you legitimately use
or illegitimately abuse a proxy

Depending upon the situation, somtimes proxy services 'willingly'
release or monitor traffic, depending, of course.

Our little workshop's network connects to our external proxy via SSH.
>From there, our requests are piped out through a T3 collocation - our

host is never disclosed.

If you want a proxy server with no logging, you'll probably have to
configure it yourself as most proxy service providers require logging.
We manage the logs on our proxy server, which is the same server that
runs our IDS (Snort, Nagios, etc). If you're worried about someone
tracking data/logs, t's a good thing to remember that, unless you wipe
the drive approximately seven times, the data can still be extracted.
Even then, I've seen clean room recoveries pull some data off a drive.

Keep in mind that anything you do on the Internet may be on the front
page of tomorrows newspaper, no matter what proxy servive you use. Keep
in mind that some governments have webpages/apps designed to fool you
into signing up with their proxy service.

I've wondered about that -- it would be so easy for the government to
offer a proxy service and then just watch for illegal activity. They
wouldn't even have to promise privacy.
Do you know of any real incidents where that's happened, anywhere?
Surely some third-world government has done it by now, at least.
China almost certainly.
