Anyone know of a way in XP to invoke the "scan for hardware changes" that
you can do from within device manager/hardware either from a run line or
command prompt (rundll32 maybe??).

I want to be able to run it from a desktop icon.

TIA

Download and run Process Explorer

Run whatever you run to "scan for hardware changes" while it's working
double click on the process to read it's image, copy the command line.

Paste the command line to a short-cut.
