SQL Server 2000 question: What's the relationship between users and logins

Im almost finished with 70-229 study, but I am stuck on one issue. I do not understand why database "users" need to be mapped
to a server "login". In Enterprise Manager, you right click in the database on users, and you specify the login mapping.

Anybody with an answer to this to help me out?
